Learn how to use mordants and modifiers before and after dyeing to achieve a subtle range of shades from the same dyebath.  Working with one ancient dyestuff, we’ll cover the key aspects of preparing and working with a natural dyebath; fibre preparation and mordanting, sourcing dyestuffs, preparing and using the dyebath and safety, modifying, over-dyeing to create complex colours, record-keeping and other tips.

Time permitting, we may be able to squeeze in a walk around the local area to explore the dye potential of some of the plants growing in urban Glasgow. If you are particularly interested in working with local dyes, please have a look at the workshop, Introduction to natural dyes and local colour.

Limited to 8 participants.

Date: 10-4.30 on Saturday July 6, 2024

Level: Beginner, however this workshop also offers further scope for learning and experimenting for dyers with some experience.

Included: All materials, comprehensive notes on processes covered, samples of fabric and yarn dyed in the workshop and tea and snacks!

Location: This workshop will take place in a large studio in Bridgeton, Glasgow. The studio is located on the second floor of a 1960's building with access via stairs or a lift. If you have any questions about accessibility, please get in touch via the contact page or email
