Yellow and blue makes green
Join horticulturist and craftsperson Julia Billings for a weekend exploring greens, the most elusive of colours in the world of natural dyes.
This two-day workshop is designed for those who have done the introductory local colour workshop or who have some experience working with natural dyes. It will take place in my studio in Bridgeton, Glasgow over the weekend of July 23-24 from 9.30-4.30.
Day one: Yellow
On Saturday, we’ll work with a number of different dyebaths, using both local and exotic sources of yellow, and explore the different types of yellow dyes and their chemistry, hue and fastness. Some of these dyes will also give greens with the use of mordants and modifiers. We’ll dye yarn and fabric samples in each bath to create a shadecard with many shades of yellow, plus duplicates to dip in indigo to make greens.
Day two: Blue
Sunday will be focused on indigo, following the age-old steps to create an organic indigo vat and dipping our duplicate samples in both strong and weak vats to produce myriad shades of green and teal to complete our shadecard.
Together, these two days of exploration should give participants a deeper understanding of how different yellows combine with indigo to make green and how to achieve a desired shade.

Level: Intermediate. This workshop is designed for those who have done the introductory local colour workshop or who have some experience working with natural dyes. No experience working with indigo is required.
Included: All materials, comprehensive notes on processes covered, samples of fabric and yarn dyed in the workshop and tea and snacks

COVID: In order to comply with Scotland's government safety requirements, there will be a limit of 10 participants to allow for social distancing. All precautions, such as the wearing of masks while moving about, maximum ventilation of the studio before and during the workshop, and enhanced cleaning and sanitising facilities, will be ensured.
